How to Choose the Best Motorcycle Accessories |
If you have recently begun riding a motorcycle, or have just purchased one, you may be wondering which motorcycle accessories you need to purchase. This can be a tricky subject, as it largely pertains to what your personal needs are. You will need different accessories if you are planning a cross-country road trip than if you just intend to cruise around town for example. Here I will highlight some of the most important motor cycle accessories available to you and how you can use them. Motorcycle accessories can be switched on your bike as the situation determines, so you may find that it will be in your best interest to accumulate several different types of the same thing for various uses.
The first accessory I'd like to mention is one that experienced bikers swear by. It is more of a superficial item, or a superstitious one, but it needs to be included here. I am referring to the guardian bell, also called a gremlin by some. This is a very small bell that is attached somewhere on your motorcycle and supposedly brings luck and protection to the rider. The superstitions behind this tradition abound, and many swear that using one prevents tragic accidents. However silly this may sound, I can almost guarantee that no road warrior or seasoned biker ever rides without one. The most important tradition behind this item is that it cannot be purchased by the rider- it must be given as a gift or it doesn't work!
Now we can get into more serious motorcycle accessories. If you've just completed your CBT in London you'll certainly want to invest in some protective clothing. It may not be as stylish as some of the motorcycle gear available, but it's wise to stay safe until you are a more experienced rider. A very important motorcycle accessory to have if you intend to ride with a passenger is a back rest. Many bikes come with a back seat, but few come ready equipped with a back rest. These not only offer an additional safety measure for your rider, but also provide some much needed support and comfort. You can find them in a wide variety of styles to suit your personal tastes on appearance. The most important thing to look for is stability once attached or secured- the kinds that bolt on instead of an easily removable sliding mechanism are the safest. You can also look for one that features a pad to promote comfort.
Next on the list are saddle bags. As far as motorcycle accessories go, this is a pretty important one. Adding saddle bags gives you the option to store important items for you and your passenger. If you plan to be out all day and into the night for example, you'll need a safe place to store your night riding glasses to switch out when the sun goes down. You might also want to carry tools in case of a break down, or a riding jacket and chaps if the weather starts to get too cool. There is a huge variety of side bags available, and you get them already painted to match your ride too! You have the choice between hard side bags and soft ones- the biggest difference is that the hard bags provide the best protection from rain, but soft bags take up less space.
If you don't need the storage space that saddle bags provide, then you can opt for a small front pouch that rests affixed to the top of your forks, or directly under the handlebars. Typically these bags are just small leather satchels that hold enough room to empty your pockets, store your license, registration, and insurance info, and possibly store a flashlight or a screwdriver.
Of course, these are not all the possible options for motor cycle accessories, but these are some of the most important. As an experienced rider these have always been the most important items on my list.
